Christmas Traditions

I have some pretty good reasons why I haven't blogged for a few weeks. Life has been pretty crazy with kids performances (seems like there are even more this year) and wrapping up my classes. Of course, getting ready for Christmas is time consuming...it takes me two days to put up all of my nativities and trees. But I've also been really busy with my new calling. The week before Thanksgiving, I was called to be the Primary President. That means I'm over all of the kids in our ward, about 145 of them! I'm very excited to work with the kids, but it is a huge job and I just hope I can juggle everything and still remain partially sane. It will be a neat adventure and a growing experience.

So, I will post some pictures of all the goings on soon, but I wanted to blog about Christmas traditions. I LOVE traditions. I think they create such great memories. Sometimes they are very time consuming to prepare for, but it's always worth it. I grew up doing so many of these and it's wonderful to pass them on to my children. I put them together in a top ten list along with our other favorites this time of year.

TOP TEN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS:

10- Singing a Christmas song each night before family prayer.

9- Getting new PJs every Christmas Eve.

8- Putting out all of the Christmas decorations, especially my hand stitched stockings and all of my nativity scenes (I have over 100 now!).

7- Driving around and counting Christmas lights. We love Christmas Street in Salt Lake.

6- Christmas parties. We love the ward progressive dinner and the ward Christmas breakfast every year. We also look forward to the Frazier Christmas party in Oakley. But our favorite is the big Christmas Eve party at our house every year!

5- Watching Christmas movies. Our favorites are listed below.

4- Decorating gingerbread houses. It wouldn't be Christmas without this tradition!

3- Visiting Temple Square with all of their lights and Nativities.

2- Kids putting together a Christmas program. They do a wonderful job!

1- We take turns opening presents by who is GIVING instead who is GETTING. We love doing it this way because it focuses on the giver.

TOP TEN CHRISTMAS SONGS WE PLAY:

10- A Baby Changes Everything by Faith Hill

9- Joy To The World by Voice Male

8- When My Heart Finds Christmas by Harry Connick Jr.

7- Unto You This Night by Garth Brooks

6-Mary Did You Know? By Donny Osmond

5- What Child Is This? By Josh Groban

4- The Christmas Song by Nat "King" Cole

3- The Gift by Jim Brickman

2- O Holy Night by Linda Eder

1- Baby, What You Going To Be? by Natalie Sleeth

TOP FIVE CHRISTMAS MOVIES:

5- Miracle On 34th Street (the one with Richard Attenborough)

4- How The Grinch Stole Christmas (the classic one, of course)

3- Nora's Christmas Gift

2- White Christmas

1- It's A Wonderful Life

Christmas is a wonderful time of year when we get to spend time with family and create wonderful memories. Can't wait to get started!!!

My Cup Runneth Over

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!!!

I can't believe that it's here, (I'm still wondering where the last three months went) but I LOVE this time of year!!

I need to still make three dozen rolls this morning, but I need to take a minute to express my gratitude for my blessings. I believe that my gratitude increases when I outwardly express it. Since starting this blog, I love updating my gratitude list each week because it helps me to really reflect on my life and all of the good in it.

So, on this Day of Thanks, here are some of the things I am thankful for:

• My wonderful family. What would I do without you? You are ALWAYS there for me and love me unconditionally. What a strength and support you are in my life!

• My Heavenly Father. He never gives up on me, just keeps helping me through life. He gave me wonderful parents and has guided me to where I am today.

• His son, Jesus Christ. He has given me SO much! Through Him, I am able to take my concerns, doubts, and fears to my Heavenly Father, and He then quiets those fears. He has literally healed my broken heart and broken body so many times. I am forever grateful...

• My freedom. I am so grateful for the privilege of living in this free land. To benefit from the loyalty, dedication, and sacrifice of countless heroes who have gone before to protect that freedom. It is humbling to think about them and how they have blessed the lives of me and so many others.

• My hubby. I included him in the first one, but he needs a separate shout-out. He is my best friend. I would not be the person I am today without him. Every day he makes me want to be a better person. He is such an example of unconditional love and he treats me like a queen. I can't express how much he means to me and I get tingles when I think about spending forever with him. He has taught me more about love than anyone else.

• My healthy body. Some would argue with me about that one, but I am so grateful for a working body. One that heals itself relatively easily and allows me to do the things that I need to do. I am also grateful for the times that my body has struggled to get better...it has taught me to rely on God and others more.

• Motherhood. I have three wonderful moms to look up to. They are wonderful people and have taught me more about my sacred calling to raise my beautiful children. Being a mother is the hardest and greatest thing I have ever, or will ever do and I can't express enough how grateful I am for the privilege.

• My desire to learn. I have always loved to learn, and am so grateful for the opportunity I have to finish my schooling. I'm grateful for a mind that can understand and gain knowledge.

• The comforts of home. How blessed I am to live in a nice house with warm rooms, warm water, working appliances, comfortable beds, food to eat, and even little things like toothbrushes and blow dryers.

• Good food. I have to put this one in here, because I love food so much! Life would definitely being far less wonderful without yummy stuff to stuff my face with.

• Friends. You are my lifeline! I have so many wonderful friends who love and support me through life. You call me out of the blue and cheer me up. You tell me that you pray for me when things are tough. We go to lunch and laugh our heads off. I know I can always count on you! Thank you for your friendship!

• Music. I love listening to music and singing it. I love how music makes me feel. What a blessing it is in my life.

These are just a few things on my gratitude list. A drop in the bucket, if you will. We all have so much to be thankful for!! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday! Now, let the feasting begin!!!

So...I Guess He's Not A Tree Hugger?

I gave Ethan a great big hug today and then...

Ethan--"I don't like hugs, they make me too hot!"

Mom--"I'm sad that you don't like hugs."

Ethan--"yeah, and I don't like trees either."

Make a Joyful Noise

My great friend Stephanie gave me a vinyl wall quote several years ago. It says “Make A Joyful Noise” and it is on my wall right above my piano. I have loved that quote ever since I can remember. To me, it means to fill your life with joyful music…all kinds of music, anything that brings joy. I have always LOVED to sing, in fact, I don’t remember I time when I didn’t sing. From love ballads to Christmas carols to rock songs to Broadway musicals, you name it, I sing it and love it.

I believe that music is a big part of who we are, whether you are “musical” or not. Certain songs bring out distinct memories and fill you with emotions. I love how a song can take you right back a moment, flooding you with memories…

My friend, Nan recently posted on her blog all of the songs that have had a big impact on her life. I loved reading it and wanted try the experiment myself. It was so fun thinking about all of the music that I’ve enjoyed throughout my life and that has perhaps even influenced me in some way. The list I have compiled is diverse, unique, and all mine. This is the “playlist” of my memories:

TRACK 1 – Elvira by The Oakridge Boys
OK, you are probably thinking to yourself, “what is up with THAT song as her first pick?!!?!” Well, this song is my first musical memory. My mom, Nancy was big into country music when I was little. Alabama, Dolly Parton, and Willie Nelson were always playing in her car. Our favorite was Elvira and the three of us would sing it at the top of our lungs. My favorite part was the “Giddy Up Oom Poppa Omm Poppa Mow Mow” part (I mean, who DOESN’T have that as their favorite part?). When Denise and I would go over to our friend Shannon’s house, we would put that tape on and blare it loudly in her basement….good times.

TRACK 2 – I’ve Been Working On the Railroad by Unknown
Wow, you are probably thinking so far this playlist is a dud, right? Well, work with me and hear me out. This is a song that I used to sing with Denise CONSTANTLY. I think it was this song where we first learned to harmonize. I had figured out at this point that I absolutely loved singing any time, any where, and any song. Denise and I haven’t stopped singing together since.

TRACK 3 – The Christmas Waltz by The Carpenters
Now, the memories start flooding back. Growing up, I loved Christmas time at my house. My mom always made everything look so beautiful, especially the living room where the Christmas tree was set up. Normally, we weren’t allowed to play in the living room. In fact, unless we had a good reason, we weren’t even supposed to be in the living room at all. But during the month of December, things changed a little bit. I remember sometimes after dinner, when all was quiet, I would turn out all of the lights except the tree lights, and put on the Carpenter’s Christmas record in the record player. Each song is a wonderful memory, but my favorite was “The Christmas Waltz”. I would sing and dance around the living room for what seemed like hours. How I love that memory of Christmas and music.

TRACK 4 – America by Neil Diamond
I could have picked dozen of songs by Neil…I love them all. But I chose this one because it brings back so many memories of my Dad. He is a huge Neil fan and that definitely rubbed off on me. When I was little, I would go into his workroom downstairs and watch him work on various projects. He had hundreds and hundreds of records, and he always had one playing. We would listen to Neil Diamond and talk about what he was doing or what was going on in my life. He never seemed preoccupied with what he was doing or got impatient with me. This is when I learned that he would always be there for me…I have never forgotten that. I love you so much, Dad!
TRACK 5 – Angel of the Morning by Juice Newton
Another weird song, I know, but my memory is so funny about this one. While growing up, my grandpa lived in Manilla, just south of Flaming Gorge. On the weekends I spent with my mom, we would often drive up there and visit him. It was a three hour drive from where we lived. That’s a long drive when you are little. We would pass the time by eating Chocolate Licorice (YUM!) and singing. I loved this song back then and sang it very loudly. My mom suddenly started CRACKING UP at my singing! How rude! It turns out that I may have been a little mixed up on the lyrics. The line that goes “Just call me angel of the morning ANGEL/just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby” I kinda sorta thought it said “Just BRUSH MY TEETH before you leave me, baby”. I was little, OK? Give a little girl a break! We had a great laugh about it, and still giggle when it is brought up to this day…great memory!

TRACK 6 – Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey
Well, I started to grow up at this point, and in high school, I discovered Journey. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love them, so this wasn’t a hard choice. I remember a trip up to Bear Lake for Spring Break one year, listening to Journey in my friend Mike’s car the entire way. This song still ties me to that trip and those wonderful high school friends.

TRACK 7 – Fields Of Gold by Sting
I will always tie this song to my first love. It was the summer of ’93 (summer loves are so great, aren’t they?) and he was leaving for a mission in September, so we spent every spare moment we had together. This song had just been released and it was on the radio a lot. I loved the part where he kisses her and I would always think of him during the song. After the summer was over, we parted ways, but this song will always make me think of that fun summer with him.
TRACK 8 – Rodeo by Garth Brooks
Speaking of that fun summer, my boyfriend was a huge Garth Brooks fan. We ALWAYS listened to country music when we were together. I was never really into country (growing up with Elvira doesn’t count!) so his excitement was hard to get used to. But, after listening to it all summer, I learned to love Garth, Reba, and others. This is not my favorite Garth song, but I chose it because it totally reminds me of him. It’s so twangy and upbeat. He would sing this song while we were driving SO loud. It was so fun to watch him and join it. Fun memory!

TRACK 9 – Oh l’Amore --by Erasure
I moved away to college in Logan and lived in the “Morm Dorms”. Great experience!!! I loved being on my own and made so many great friends. Our building had four apartments on each level—two guy apartments and two girl apartments. Our doors all connected to a common area which we would hang out in and we always left our doors open during the day, so everyone visited everyone else. It was like I had 23 other roomies!! My mom gave a hammock for Christmas that year and I hung it in the open area to an exposed pipe in the ceiling. We had a great time just chillin’ in that hammock (until I was asked to take it down). I grew especially close to one of my roommates. She was a kindred spirit, and I learned a lot from her. She loved Erasure and would play their music a lot. I had heard their stuff, but not enough to love it. We changed the words of this song to fit a girl’s perspective, memorized the words, and sang it together a lot. Whenever we were having “boy trouble” we would sing this song. My freshmen year was definitely better because I knew her.

TRACK 10 – Somebody by Depeche Mode
Well, now Ryan steps into the picture. We listened to and sang this song on our date to Homecoming at USU. It was one of those things that I will never forget. I had never really paid much attention to this song before then, but I knew it well enough to hum along to on the radio. Ryan taught me the words to the song and it was stuck in my head the rest of the night. I don’t know if the song had anything to do with it, or not, but my feelings started to change for him from that date on. My favorite part? “But when I’m asleep, I want somebody who will put their arms around and kiss me tenderly" (sigh)

TRACK 11 – California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & The Papas
Ryan and I then began wedded bliss. We went to Hawaii on our honeymoon, but decided to fly out of LA. So we leisurely drove down to California, stopped for a day in Vegas, and had a great time. I think it was on this very first road trip where we sang this song together. We have been singing it on every road trip since. We each take a part, Ryan is first and I’m the echo. I love the way this song makes me reminds me of the great times we have together. It sounds so cheesy, but it’s true. I will always cherish this song and can’t wait for the next road trip when we sing it again.

TRACK 12 – Bushel and a Peck by Frank Loesser
Then came the baby in the baby carriage. I have always loved musicals, and Guys and Dolls is one of my favorites. I sang this song to my kids when they were little. They would all laugh at the “oodle” part. The best part is when Ryan sings the “oodle” echo part really high. It is the cutest thing. This songs brings back so many memories of my babies. Such wonderful times! I don’t sing this to them much anymore…I don’t really know why. I should start up again, especially when they are frustrating me…maybe that would lighten things back up again!

TRACK 13 – More Holiness Give Me performed by Kenneth Cope
I have to put a church song in because I have always loved the hymns. Last year, the Bishop asked me to pick my favorite hymn and talk about it in church. Pick a favorite hymn? How do you do that? It's like picking a favorite kid---it can't be done. But I had to choose and so I picked "More Holiness Give Me" and Kenneth Cope's version is by far my favorite. I love it because it gives me the hope that if I try a little every day, I will someday become more like my Savior. I'm so glad that He never gives up on me!
Track 14 -- Little Wonders by Rob Thomas
I don't have any particular reason to include this song other than the fact that I love it. It's message is wonderful. I think it's about when it's all said and done, it's the little things that matter, the little moments in time that mean so much. And when we think things aren't going our way, we need to look at things with a different perspective. "Our lives are made in these small hours/These little wonders, these twists and turns of fate/Time falls away but these small hours still remain"
So, there's my playlist. Interesting compilation, but each has so much meaning for me. Music is such a big part of life. I would love to know what songs have made an impression on you and what memories they invoke. And while you're at it, don't forget to make a joyful noise today!

It's "PUNKIN" Time!!

It's that time of year when all things are spooky, orange, and full of sugar. We enjoy this time of year and have a lot of traditions, but this time, it was a little crazier. Our kids are getting bigger and that makes some things a lot harder. I hope we can hold onto these traditions as long as possible. What a fun time of year!!

First tradition is the "PUNKINS"! We have been growing our own pumpkins for four or five years now. Usually, we get quite a few and they are HUGE. It is so fun to watch them get bigger and bigger over the summer. Unfortunately, this year the earwigs got to them, and only two little pumpkins made it...TWO! How disappointing! Oh well, change of plans....we took a trip to the pumpkin patch and let the kids pick out their own pumpkin. (sorry for the low picture quality, my camera is being weird and I still can't find my computer cord for it, so most of these pix are from my phone.)

We had a lot of fun picking out our pumpkins, although they were pretty heavy. I think we purchased over 200 pounds of pumpkins that night!

Second tradition is Frightmares! at Lagoon. We love going to Lagoon this time of year...less crowds and nice weather. We didn't take full advantage of our season passes this year because of my surgery, so we were glad for a chance to go. We went with our friends, the Andreasons. We love them a ton and we all had a great time (we even watched a hypnotist show!)

We also have fun playing with the kids and their friends. This includes class Halloween parties at school. I dropped the ball this year for the first time and didn't go into help, but they had fun with their classes. I did, however, have a playgroup Halloween party for Ethan and his friends. I took all of them to the pumpkin patch and let them pick out their own (little) pumpkin, and then we brought them home to paint...yep, paint. We don't carve pumpkins at our house, it's too messy and the pumpkins don't last very long, so we paint them instead. The boys had a ball.

And here they are in their costumes before their preschool Halloween party. Aren't they cute (especially the cowboy on the end)?
Next tradition was to paint our family pumpkins. We always do this for Family Home Evening the first part of October. Again, this year was crazier than usual due to the fact that Lauren has two ballet practices on Monday night. So she and Dad didn't get to paint theirs and Braiden just ran out of time to finish his. But for those of us who did paint, we had a great time! Ethan was so funny, he painted himself as a skeleton on his pumpkin. Katie painted "Trick or Treat! But I prefer the treats!" on her pumpkin!

Now it's onto the Halloween party. Our ward puts on a HUGE Halloween Bash every year, complete with food, face painting, game booths, homemade Rootbeer, and lots of candy. It is so fun and our neighbors really go all out on their costumes. Ryan and I are not big into dressing up for the holiday, but this year we decided to go for it. Ryan was Napoleon Dynamite and I was Deb. We both looked pretty funny, but I didn't get any pictures!! Again, not to sound like a broken record, but this year was crazy...I had to be somewhere else the night of the party, so I was only there for a few minutes and Ryan was running the Rootbeer station all night, so I didn't get to document the event. But believe me when I say, we looked great. I managed to get my hair in a side ponytail and wore ridiculous white pants, a horrible pink shirt, and a fanny pack. Ryan was "incredible" in his hair, glasses, T-shirt, and boots! Maybe I will make him put the hair and glasses on and snap a quick picture here soon so you can get a taste for it...it was hilarious! Lauren and her friends did get their pictures taken at the party...so cute!

Now it's time for the main event. The big night of begging for free food door to door. Good times! I cooked a bunch of soups and had Denise, the Groves, and the Mays over for dinner. The girls left early to go Trick or Treating with their friends, so we didn't get a group Halloween picture, but here are all the kids in their costumes.
Ethan
The Cowboy

Katie
The Cute Witch
Braiden
BumbleBee from Transformers
Lauren
Hermione from Harry Potter
All in all, we had a great Halloween, just busier and crazier than usual. Everyone seems to be going a hundred different directions and it takes a lot more effort to keep up with traditions. I guess that's just happens when we get older. But it's well worth the effort to keep trying.
One last note, I couldn't leave this one out. After Halloween, Ryan left his Napoleon wig in the car and Ethan snatched it up and started singing a funny song. I guess we all know what he will be next year.

Happy Halloween!

My Little Braiden

My little Braiden just had a birthday. He is now seven years old.

Seven.

Years.

That's old.

Where did the time go? How did this happen? Am I in some sort of time warp? I remember when I found out that we were pregnant with him, and inside, I was secretly scared about having a boy. I already had two little girly girls....I wasn't sure how to be a mom to a boy! But all fears completely and immediately disappeared when I saw him for the first time. Now, I can't imagine life without my sweet little boy.

So, since this is his birthday post, I wanted to take a "snapshot" of Braiden the way he is right now. This is my little man at age seven:

--He absolutely adores his dad. I love this about him. It is so funny, because he has to wear whatever Dad is wearing. If Dad takes off his baseball hat, Braiden does too. If Dad changes into shorts, Braiden disappears for a while and then comes back in shorts! It is the cutest thing. He really cares what his Dad thinks about things and I hope that continues forever.

--He is not a morning person. Poor kid, he inherited this from me. For the first few weeks of school, I didn't think we would make it. Twelve years of getting up early and being to school on time? I don't think so! We had a very rough start until he received a Mater (from the movie CARS) alarm clock for his birthday. Now, Mater yells at him in his southern drawl every morning to get out of bed. It has worked like a charm and he doesn't have to be told a second time to get moving!

--He loves Kaden. Kaden is his best buddy in the whole world and I hope it will always be that way. They have a great time together, usually riding bikes or playing the Wii.

--He loves babies. Ever since I can remember, he as been obsessed with them. When Ethan came along, he was constantly begging me to let him hold him and have me take his picture. His latest obsession is with his cousin, Cora. He loves to hold her little hands and kiss them. It is so sweet.

--He likes his ears. I know this one sounds really weird, but he likes playing with his ear. He is always bending it and folding it over on itself. It's the funniest thing, and I know if I don't write it down, I will forget this cute little quirk of his.

--He loves to joke around. He has quite the funny personality. He is always cracking jokes, quoting movies at just the right time, and being plain silly. Here he is getting ready for the July 4th rodeo being silly...

And here he is again at Disneyland practicing his air guitar skills. Funny kid...

--He is very affectionate. He is my cuddler. He will offer free hugs out of the blue at random times of the day. I can always count on him if I need a little squeeze.

--He likes sports. I wouldn't say that he is athletic, but he does enjoy playing sports. His favorite is basketball (probably because it's Dad's favorite). He also plays soccer and T-Ball.

--He is a very picky eater. I have to say that most of the trouble we get from Braiden is over food. I don't know if it stems from his Reflux when he was a baby, or if he just takes after me when I was a kid (I'm much better now), but he will turn up his nose at most things. After some arguing, he is usually the last one still at the dinner table and when he finally decides to eat, he realizes that it isn't as bad as he feared. The problem is, he always forgets that when I cook it again and we have to repeat the entire process.

--Favorites. Favorite show--Phineas and Ferb. Favorite toy--his bike or Legos. Favorite cereal--Rice Chex. Favorite lunch--Mac and Cheese. Favorite sandwich--Peanut Butter and Honey. Favorite ride at Lagoon--Wicked.

These are a few things that I always want to remember about Braiden at age seven. I already know all too well how fast time flies. There are so many things in the past twelve years of being a mom that I have forgotten and it makes me sad inside. I am now using blogging as my "journal" and trying to preserve these "snapshots" of time. I know it won't be too long before I look back on this time and remember with fondness my little man.

Here are the rest of his birthday pictures. They turned out really cute. He doesn't like to smile with his teeth showing because he think he looks goofy. I think he's cute either way, but maybe I'm a little biased.

Happy Birthday, Braiden! I love you!

This Ain't Your Average Road Trip

The following post contains the ramblings of our recent trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This will be a looooong post, because well, it was a long road trip. Just warning you now, before we even begin.

My sister, Jessica moved to Wisconsin two years ago when her husband, John began dental school. We miss them and their two kids a lot. They come out for visits at least twice a year, but we decided it was time to venture out their way. When I say venture, I really mean drive...yeah, we are nuts.

We wanted to drive for several reasons. First of all, flying six people to Milwaukee is a very expensive proposition which usually includes at least one long layover...ummm, I don't think so. Second, most of us had not seen most of that part of the country, so we wanted to experience it from the ground. And finally, we wanted to give our kids fuel for all the therapy they are going to need someday just for the basic fact that they belong to us. I mean really, who in their right mind drives four kids halfway across the country!!?!?

We chose the week of the UEA holiday so the kids wouldn't miss too much school. We were all very excited to see the family, but not so much about driving. But I have to take a moment here to say that getting ready for any kind of trip is not very enjoyable for me, but especially one where we are gone for so long and we are driving. The house has to be "vacationized" which includes straightening everything, cleaning out the fridge, removing all perishable foods and garbage, completely finishing laundry, and having a clean kitchen. These are the bare minimums because I HATE coming home to chaos. Plus, you have to clean out the car, then fill it back up with all of the CRAP we have to take with us.

I got each of the kids their own over-the-seat-put-all-of-your-stuff-in-and-don't-leave-it-anywhere-else-in-the-car organizers. They loved packing and organizing all of the activities that I bought them which included sticker books, travel games, magnet boards, learning activities, and play sets. We packed plenty of movies, of course, and the girls had their iPods. But let's not forget the snacks. The snack box was easily accessible and we had two coolers--one for Sunday meals and one for drinks and snacks. Whew!! We were finally ready to go!

For the first day and a half this is what we did:

Pretty exciting, huh? But the kids were SO good! Everyone stayed entertained for the most part and no one got car sick!! Yahoo! Throughout the trip, the kids said some pretty funny things, I started teasing them that they were going to be quoted on my blog. Here is the first of many:

CUTE QUOTE

DAD -- There's a prong horn over there

BRAIDEN -- What's a prong horn?

DAD -- Antelope

BRAIDEN -- Where's the cantaloupe?

We stayed in Omaha so we could visit the Winter Quarters visitors center. It was neat to see, especially having just experienced Trek. The kids liked it and the missionary was very impressed with how much the girls knew about the gospel and church history. The kids even got to pull a real handcart and realized how hard it really was.

It's amazing to think that we traveled the entire pioneer trail from Winter Quarters (Florence, Nebraska) to Salt Lake -- which took the pioneers months by wagon, handcart, and foot -- in just a day and a half. And, instead of grueling extreme hot and cold temperatures, illness, lack of food, etc., we arrived in relatively comfortable travel, including air conditioning, gas station stops, and movies. It's a lot to think about and to be grateful for!!!

We also walked around the cemetery and the temple grounds. There is a lot of history there. So many pioneers died that first winter before crossing the plains. It was a peaceful way to spend the morning.

After our little break, we were back in the car. And, after another full day of driving, we finally made it to Wisconsin! The drive was not as bad as everyone kept telling us. Nebraska was nothing but farmland, just as I thought, but it wasn't ugly or boring. The farms were pretty and I enjoyed the rolling hills (I assumed it would be flat like Kansas). All in all, not a bad drive, but we were thrilled to finally be there!

CUTE QUOTE

BRAIDEN -- I spy with my little eye something blue.....oh yeah, and it rhymes with BUNGLASSES!!

CUTE QUOTE

KATIE -- Nebraska is the Cornhusker State and all they have is football!

So we made it and received a warm welcome. Jessica's house was very cute and the kids were all very excited to see each other. We quickly started planning out our schedule. We knew we wanted to see Lake Michigan, but the rest was wide open. We decided to go to the museum on Monday, the Zoo on Tuesday, and the lake on Wednesday. We couldn't wait for the fun to begin!

The museum was a lot of fun. We saw many displays of ancient civilizations, dinosaurs, and animals. We watched a hilarious movie about dinosaurs that we all giggled over. They also had a butterfly garden which I think the kids liked the best.

They had these cultural scenes where music was playing from that particular area. The kids loved the music and danced really silly.

After the museum, we drove to Uncle John's dental school at Marquette University. During our visit, he introduced us to the "Tooth Fairy".

Really??!!? That's the Tooth Fairy? Why any kid would want THAT thing to come into their house and snoop around for loose teeth is beyond me! Talk about freaky!! But the kids weren't freaked out--they actually really liked her.

The next day was Braiden's birthday. When we realized that we were going to celebrate Braiden's birthday in Milwaukee, we were excited. Braiden chose to go to the zoo for his special day. Milwaukee has a great zoo and because it was a weekday, we had the whole place pretty much to ourselves.

Some of the highlights were the bears....

And the penguins....

It was a beautiful fall day and we enjoyed it very much. We even got to take some monkeys home with us!

That night, for Braiden's birthday dinner, we found out about a "spy" restaurant. It sounded fun, so off we went. It is in an alleyway in downtown Milwaukee and it is disguised as an exporting company. We knew right away that this was going to be an adventure!

When we walked in, there was a tiny entryway with a lady sitting there. She asked us for the password, which we didn't have. So we had to perform a task to enter. She knew it was Braiden's birthday, so we had to sing to him and he had to do the chicken dance. It was so funny! When we completed the task, the fireplace opened up to reveal a passageway. At the end of the passage was a dead end. But another wall opened and we were finally inside the restaurant. It was then that we found out that the whole restaurant had been watching us on TV screens singing and doing the chicken dance. They all laughed and clapped for us!

While we were waiting for our food, there was lots to do and places to explore. There were spy posters everywhere (mostly Bond movie posters) and secret passage ways. You could hide in the girls bathroom and spy on people in the hallway. We also discovered a passage way that led to the outside and you couldn't come back in except through the front door. We ran back in the restaurant before the door closed on us.

Our birthday boy enjoying his dinner...

We went back to Jessica's for a quick birthday party. My little boy is seven now! I can't believe how fast the time has flown by. But I don't have time to be nostalgic, that is for another post. Right now we just need to keep moving on with the rest of the trip! But first, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Braiden!!

On our final day in Wisconsin, we went to see Lake Michigan. We visited a really neat nature preserve. The kids got to get their wiggles out, we saw a few wild turkeys, went hiking on the trails and enjoyed an absolutely beautiful fall day!

We climbed this big tower and enjoyed spectacular views of the lake.

Then we walked down to the beach.

Yet another beach that the kids loved to play at. And to think that we have never taken them to the beach in California! Guess we need to put that on our list.

Here are some more pictures (nice one of me sporting the double chin!)

It was sad to think that our visit to Milwaukee was over! We had had so much fun and played so hard. Now it was time to hit the road and sit and sit and sit. We reluctantly said goodbye and headed West, but this time we drove up through Minnesota and South Dakota. We had two very long travel days and the weather was terrible. I actually thought the wind might tip us over a time or two. We stopped in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and stopped to look at the falls. Well, everyone did but me because I was too cold to get out of the car, but Ryan got a picture of the kids.

That day, I discovered I left my swimming suit at Jessica's. Knowing that we were planning on swimming in the hotel the next night, we stopped at the local mall to find me a suit. It was raining pretty hard when we all got out of the car. Suddenly, Katie tripped on something and fell face first right into the biggest puddle in the whole parking lot. She wasn't hurt, but she was drenched from head to toe! We ended up getting her some new clothes along with my new suit. After the initial shock wore off, we told her that years from now she would think the whole experience was pretty funny. She finally laughed with us and we teased her about it the rest of the trip.

On our way to Rapid City, we drove through Badlands National Park. Now, if you have ever been to Bryce Canyon NP, it looks similar to that, only Badlands lacks color. It should be named Blandlands if you ask me. I wasn't extremely impressed, but again, I was FREEZING and the wind was brutal. We only stayed for a very short time. If you ask me, the best part of Badlands NP was watching all of the Prarie dogs bobbing their heads up and down!

Ethan and I trying to stay warm, but still looking cool in our matching Disneyland jackets and sunglasses...

Our hotel in Rapid City had a waterslide at the pool. The kids thought this was the best thing ever and we spend the night having a wonderful time. It may not look like much, but the slide was pretty fast. It occured to me that night, that our family gets along so well when we take them swimming. It is complete and peaceful bliss the whole time, every time. It was the perfect ending to a very long two days.

I know it's hard to see, and even harder to prove, but this next picture is me flying down the slide. Katie couldn't take the picture fast enough, but I promise it's me. I had a blast!

CUTE QUOTE (after washing his hands with the hotel soap)

BRAIDEN -- What's that smell? It smells like cookies....but mostly soap.

The next morning, we were off to Mount Rushmore. It was neat and we all enjoyed it. The weather was cool, but dry. We were so glad the rain and the wind had stopped and we could experience this neat monument.

My big noggin is covering up Teddy and Abe...oops! I didn't have the heart to ask the sweet old man taking our picture to try again.

But we all know that my head really does belong up there as indicated in this next picture...but there's that horrible double chin again!!

There was a nice walking trail that allowed us to experience the monument from different angles and vantage points. We had a brief discussion with the kids before proceeding that the trails were put there for a reason and we were to stay on the trails at all times and to not disturb the nature around us. The kids all nodded in agreement and then....

CUTE QUOTE (to a nice young gentleman who just wanted to get a picture from on top of a large rock)

ETHAN -- Stay on the trail, DUDE!!!

CUTE QUOTE (after viewing the monument from the vantage point in the following picture)

ETHAN -- Whoa! Two heads fell off!!

Right next to the visitor's center were two beautiful mountain goats grazing. There were people all around and they were perfectly content to stay right there! I guess Critter Watch '09 was back in full swing!

After Mount Rushmore, we went to Jewel Cave. Again, maybe I'm just partial to all things Utah, but compared to Timpanogos Cave, this was just a big hole underground. There weren't even that many "jewels" which were really calcium crystals. But still, it was interesting to see.

Outside, they had a cement block where you could see if you could fit in the tight spaces you typically find in caves. All of the kids made it through, of course....

Ryan, not so much. His shoulders were too broad. And here we thought his true calling in life was to be a cave explorer. I guess it's back to the office for you, Honey.

The drive home through the Black Hills was absolutely stunning. I had no idea that there were mountains this pretty in South Dakota (sorry to think that, Grandpa!). We drove on the Needles Highway and saw some spectacular fall foilage and beautiful rocky mountains. We even drove through several VERY small tunnels blown out of the granite.

It was so nice to get out of the car and spend a few hours enjoying nature. What a beautiful world we live in! I was so glad we could discover a new part of the country together.

CUTE QUOTE

LAUREN -- I keep losing my glasses!

MOM -- Honey, they are on your face!

LAUREN -- Oh yeah! Thanks, Mom

I mentioned Critter Watch '09 being back in full swing. We had had a pretty successful Critter Watch up in Jackson and Yellowstone in September, but that doesn't compare to how many wildlife we saw outside the Black Hills coming home. Buffalo, Pronghorn (aka Canteloupe), elk and deer were EVERYWHERE! It was so cool!

We finally made it home safe and sound. It was kind of brutal getting thrown back into the real world of work, school, laundry, and taxi service after such a fun trip. I am grateful for this blog, because it allows me to capture these memories before they are forgotten. I learned a lot about my family on this trip, but the most important lesson was that we have good times and not so good times, but through it all, I love spending time with them more than anything.

Our trip to Milwaukee recap:
